Gum Treatment

Gum Treatment

We will gently clean and treat your gums using the latest technology

Hygienists help with gum treatment.

When you come to our Bicknell, Indiana office for gum treatment, you will have high-tech options that will rapidly and gently eliminate most forms of gum disease, and help you to preserve your oral health and prevent tooth loss:

•  The advanced PerioProtect system is used to directly apply antibiotics to your gums.

•  Our ultrasonic wand deep-cleans your gums gently, removing even difficult to reach bacteria. This is done by means of Scaling and Root Planing (or "Deep Cleaning"). We take care to keep this procedure painless, while still remaining thorough.

In addition to Deep Cleaning, we use Arestin® therapy to help rid your gums of infectious bacteria. Special medication ensures that your gums can heal without the further growth of harmful bacteria.

Let Dr. Williams and his highly trained staff of dental hygienists examine your teeth and gums, and give you a gum treatment plan that is right for you!

The PerioProtect system will comfortably keep your gums bacteria-free

PerioProtect trayThe PerioProtect system consists of a series of trays that deliver antibiotics directly to your gum pockets, simply and painlessly. These trays can deliver medication deep into areas that are hard to reach, and will make sure that the bacteria can’t continue to grow in your gums and cause gum, tooth or bone degeneration.

While not every dentist can provide PerioProtect periodontal treatment, Dr. Williams is a Premier Certified PerioProtect Provider. And you can continue your treatment at home, using the custom-molded, medicated Perio Trays.

How it works

The PerioProtect non-surgery treatment uses a patented and FDA cleared device called PerioTrays. After a thorough examination, we take impressions of your teeth and gums.  A PerioProtect licensed dental laboratory then constructs the Perio Trays from your custom prescription.

We insert specially prescribed medications into the Perio Trays, which are then placed over the teeth and gums.  The time and frequency the Perio Trays are used each day varies by the severity of the disease.

The patented trays force the medications deep into the infected gums to reach and eradicate the harmful bacteria that are the cause of periodontal disease. Even in advanced cases, the treatment takes only minutes per day.  And you can take the trays that Dr. Williams has prepared home with you!

Ultrasonic scaling and root planing or “deep cleaning” is another weapon to Dr. Williams to help him fight gum and periodontal disease. He uses a scaling device that looks like a small wand, with a tip that produces ultrasonic vibrations. These vibrations in combination with a flow of water remove plaque, tartar and bacteria from the teeth, gums and mouth.

Ultrasonic cleaning is more effective than old-fashioned methods and can remove build-up beneath the gum line and stubborn deposits.

Advanced treatment with Arestin

When still more advanced treatment is needed to kill the bacteria that causes periodontal disease, Dr. Williams may use Arestin therapy, placing a special antibiotic in the deep pockets under the gum where bacteria accumulates. Arestin therapy greatly reduces the chances of further progression of the gum disease. The time-released medicine in the Arestin works over the next three weeks, killing bacteria and helping infected gum tissue to heal.

Symptoms of gum disease

Poor oral hygiene, irregular professional dental cleanings, smoking or chewing tobacco, taking certain medications, defective fillings, crooked teeth and systemic diseases are contributing factors to gum disease.

gum_treatment_clip_image002.jpgSome warning signs of gum disease are:

  • Gums that bleed during brushing

  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth

  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste

  • Permanent teeth that are loose or separating

  • Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

A healthy lifestyle, regular brushing and flossing and routine checkups at the dentist are the best way to keep your gums healthy and avoid gum disease.
